Life membership bestowed on humble Margaret

Life membership bestowed on humble Margaret

Erskine Grove resident and long-term volunteer, Margaret Cunningham, was recognised at the estate's 20th anniversary when she was bestowed RAAFA life membership.

Margaret, who moved into Erskine in August 2003 when only four or five people had moved into the estate, has been an incredible volunteer throughout that time, from cooking meals at events, driving the estate bus, supporting the Mavericks social group and making beautiful table decorations for functions, among many, many other things.

And although she is known as being extremely humble and shying away from any limelight, Margaret admits that she felt extremely privileged to be granted RAAFA life membership.

"I didn't know anything about it, so I was really stunned when my name was called out and the CEO, Michelle, presented me with my certificate, followed by Mr Robartson, who presented me with a medal," says 85-year-old Margaret, who is considered a real 'treasure' on the estate.

"I just love what I do and I love giving back. I haven't got time to stop and think about how volunteering benefits me, I just enjoy helping out and looking after people in my community.

"If I can do anything to help, I'm always keen to," she adds. "I love being busy and helping to make people smile and enjoy life, I always have and I always will."

Caroline Henning, Erskine's estate manager, says Margaret is an incredibly giving and selfless individual who is a stalwart of the Erskine community.

"Margaret treats her volunteer work like a job, it gives her great satisfaction and a sense of purpose," she says. "She takes great care in planning the menus, making sure the meals are wholesome and on budget, and she also makes beautiful, themed table settings as well as supervising other volunteers who help with our events.

"Margaret, has always been a 'giver' during the 20 years she has lived on the estate, quite simply she's always doing something to help others and she is truly deserving of RAAFA's life membership.

"Over the years she has made an incredible difference to many people's lives."

Congratulations Margaret, from everyone at RAAFA.
